Common methods in non-destructive testing

Commonly used non-destructive testing methods include radiographic testing (RT for short). Ultrasonic testing (UT for short), magnetic particle testing (MT for short), and penetrant testing (PT for short), which are called the four conventional testing methods. These four methods are the most commonly used non-destructive testing methods for manufacturing quality testing and in-use testing of pressure-bearing special equipment.

Among them, RT and UT are mainly used to detect internal defects of test pieces, and MT and PT are mainly used to detect surface defects of test pieces. Other non-destructive testing methods for pressure-bearing special equipment include eddy current testing (abbreviated as ET), acoustic emission testing (abbreviated as AE), etc. There are many types of rays, among which X-rays, gamma rays, and neutron rays can easily penetrate materials. These three types of rays are used for non-destructive testing. Among them, X-ray and γ-ray are often used in welding seams of pressure-bearing equipment and other industrial products and structural materials, while neutron rays are only used in some special occasions. Radiographic testing is an important professional category of industrial non-destructive testing. The main application is the detection of macroscopic geometric defects inside the test piece (flaw detection).
