Casing and Tubing: Key Precautions for Safe Use in Oil & Gas Wells

Casing and tubing are critical components of oil and gas wells, but reliable performance depends on more than selecting the correct pipe grade and dimensions. During transportation, storage, handling, installation and operation, improper practices can damage threads, reduce mechanical performance or create problems during well completion. For operators, EPC contractors and tubular buyers, the key is to treat casing and tubing as engineered well components rather than ordinary steel pipe. Specification control, thread protection, inspection, careful handling and correct installation all contribute to well integrity.

1. Confirm the Specification Before Use

The first precaution is to verify that the supplied casing or tubing matches the approved well design. Check the:

  • Applicable API 5CT specification and edition

  • Steel grade

  • Outside diameter and wall thickness

  • Pipe length and range

  • Connection or thread type

  • Required performance properties

  • Inspection and testing requirements

  • MTC and heat-number traceability

API 5CT defines requirements for casing, tubing, dimensions, grades and applicable end finishes, while API 5B addresses threading, gauging and thread inspection. Do not substitute a different grade, connection or wall thickness simply because it appears dimensionally compatible. The tubular string must be evaluated against the actual well conditions.

2. Inspect Threads and Pipe Ends Carefully

Threads are among the most sensitive parts of casing and tubing. Before installation, inspect the connection for visible damage, corrosion, contamination, deformation or damaged thread profiles. Thread protectors should remain in place during transportation and storage and should only be removed when the connection is ready for inspection or make-up. The same principle applies to couplings and accessories. A damaged connection can affect make-up performance and sealing even when the pipe body itself appears undamaged. For critical projects, thread inspection and gauging should follow the applicable specification and project inspection plan.

3. Handle the Pipe Without Causing Damage

Casing and tubing are long, relatively slender tubular products, so careless lifting or dragging can cause dents, bending or end damage. During loading, unloading and movement:

  • Use suitable lifting equipment and lifting points.

  • Avoid dropping or throwing pipe.

  • Do not drag pipe directly across the ground.

  • Prevent pipe ends from striking hard surfaces.

  • Use appropriate slings or handling tools.

  • Keep threaded connections protected.

Damage that looks minor on the pipe yard may become significant when the tubular is subjected to installation loads or downhole pressure.

4. Store Casing and Tubing Properly

Storage conditions can affect both the pipe body and connections. Pipe should be stored on stable supports that keep it clear of standing water, mud and direct ground contact. Stacking should be controlled to prevent excessive deformation and rolling. Thread protectors should be maintained during storage, and connections should be kept clean and protected from contamination. Where storage periods are extended, the condition of the pipe, coating or corrosion protection should be checked periodically. This is particularly important for projects where tubulars may remain in storage before the drilling or completion schedule begins.

5. Control Make-Up During Installation

Correct make-up is essential for threaded casing and tubing. The connection should be cleaned and prepared according to the applicable requirements before running. The correct thread compound and make-up procedure should be used, and make-up should be controlled using the specified parameters rather than relying only on operator experience. Over-torque and under-torque can both create problems. Excessive torque may damage the connection, while insufficient make-up can compromise connection performance. For this reason, installation crews should follow the approved running procedure and record relevant make-up data when required by the project.

6. Consider the Actual Downhole Environment

Casing and tubing operate under conditions that may be significantly different from those at the surface. Before selecting or installing the tubular string, engineers should consider:

  • Internal and external pressure

  • Collapse and burst loads

  • Axial loads

  • Temperature

  • Well depth

  • Fluid composition

  • Corrosion and sour-service conditions

  • Wear and other operating factors

API notes that casing and tubing serve as important containment barriers during well construction and production. Its 2025 Addendum to the 11th edition of API 5CT also introduced requirements including high-collapse products and grade C125, reflecting the need to address demanding well conditions. The correct product is therefore determined by the complete well design, not by grade or size alone.

7. Keep Inspection and Traceability Records

Inspection should not end when the pipe leaves the mill. Project teams should maintain traceability from the supplied tubular to the relevant heat number, inspection records and material documentation. Depending on the project specification, inspection may include dimensional checks, visual inspection, thread inspection, NDT and mechanical or pressure testing. Clear documentation makes it easier to identify individual pipe joints and verify compliance when questions arise during installation or operation. Final Checklist Before Running Casing or Tubing

Before casing or tubing enters the well, confirm five basic points:

  • Specification: Does the product match the approved design?

  • Condition: Are the pipe body, ends, threads and couplings free from unacceptable damage?

  • Protection: Have threads and pipe ends remained properly protected?

  • Installation: Are the approved running, cleaning, compound and make-up procedures being followed?

  • Traceability: Are MTCs, inspection records and heat numbers complete and identifiable?
