How to Choose SSAW Steel Pipe: 8 Checks Before Ordering

Choosing SSAW steel pipe should start with the project specification, not the lowest price per ton. For pipeline, water transmission, piling, structural, and industrial applications, the pipe needs to match the required material, dimensions, manufacturing standard, inspection scope, corrosion protection, and documentation. A quotation can look correct on paper while still missing important requirements. Before placing an order, buyers should check the following eight points.

1. Define the Application and Service Conditions

First, clarify where and how the SSAW steel pipe will be used. For pipeline applications, consider the transported medium, design pressure, operating temperature, installation environment, and required service life. For piling or structural applications, load conditions and dimensional requirements may be more important. These factors influence the required steel grade, wall thickness, testing, coating, and inspection level. A good RFQ should therefore describe the application before asking suppliers to quote.

2. Confirm the Standard, Grade, and PSL

Do not specify only “SSAW steel pipe.” The purchase specification should identify the applicable standard, steel grade, and product specification level where required. For petroleum and natural gas pipeline transportation systems, ISO 3183:2019 covers seamless and welded steel pipe for PSL 1 and PSL 2 applications. ISO confirmed this edition as current in April 2026.

API Spec 5L may also apply depending on the project and contractual requirements. The RFQ should clearly state:

  • Applicable standard and edition

  • Steel grade

  • PSL level, where applicable

  • Supplementary requirements

  • Chemical and mechanical property requirements

This prevents suppliers from making different assumptions about the same order.

3. Check OD, Wall Thickness, and Length

Dimensional requirements should be confirmed before production. At minimum, specify:

  • Outside diameter (OD)

  • Wall thickness (WT)

  • Pipe length

  • Dimensional tolerances

  • End preparation

  • Straightness requirements, where applicable

For large-diameter SSAW pipe, forming conditions can influence dimensional accuracy and spiral seam alignment. Buyers should therefore confirm how dimensions will be inspected and recorded. Do not assume that two suppliers quoting the same nominal size have the same tolerance or inspection scope.

4. Ask How the Spiral Weld Is Controlled

SSAW pipe is produced by forming steel strip into a cylindrical shape and joining the helical seam by submerged arc welding. The quality of the finished pipe depends on stable control of the forming and welding process.

Ask the supplier how they control:

  • Strip edge preparation

  • Strip alignment

  • Forming stability

  • Welding current and voltage

  • Welding speed and heat input

  • Welding wire and flux

  • Weld seam position

The exact welding parameters should follow the qualified welding procedure and the applicable project requirements rather than a generic preset.

5. Define NDT and Hydrostatic Testing

Weld inspection should be clearly defined in the purchase specification. Depending on the applicable standard and project requirements, NDT may include ultrasonic testing (UT), radiographic testing (RT), or other specified methods. Hydrostatic testing may also be required for pressure-containing applications. These tests serve different purposes. NDT examines specified weld or material discontinuities, while hydrostatic testing evaluates pressure-containing performance under defined test conditions. One should not automatically be treated as a substitute for the other. Before ordering, confirm the inspection method, inspection extent, acceptance criteria, test pressure where applicable, and required reports.

6. Specify the Coating and Corrosion Protection

If the SSAW steel pipe will be buried, submerged, or exposed to a corrosive environment, corrosion protection should be included in the original specification. Depending on the application, the project may require 3LPE, 3LPP, FBE, or another approved coating system. The coating specification should define:

  • Surface preparation

  • Coating system

  • Coating thickness

  • Application requirements

  • Holiday detection or other required inspection

  • Repair requirements

  • Coating inspection records

Discussing coating requirements before production is important because changing the coating system later can affect schedule and cost.

7. Check Traceability and Documentation

For large project orders, traceability is not just paperwork. It provides a link between the finished pipe and the material and inspection records behind it. Buyers should confirm how the supplier identifies and tracks each production batch or pipe. Depending on the project, the documentation package may include:

  • Mill Test Certificate (MTC)

  • Chemical and mechanical test results

  • NDT reports

  • Hydrostatic test records

  • Dimensional inspection records

  • Coating inspection reports

  • Heat-number traceability

  • Third-party inspection records, where required

The documentation requirements should be agreed before production instead of being requested only before shipment.

8. Evaluate the Supplier's Actual Capability

The final check is the supplier itself. For a technically demanding SSAW order, buyers should look beyond a company profile and product catalogue. Ask how the manufacturer handles production control, welding inspection, testing, traceability, packing, and export documentation. Where possible, review real production evidence such as: SSAW forming → Spiral seam welding → NDT → Hydrostatic testing → Final inspection → Packing and loading. Actual factory and inspection photographs can provide useful evidence of the supplier's manufacturing process. For project orders, buyers may also request relevant MTC samples, inspection procedures, quality plans, or previous project references where disclosure is permitted.

Before placing an order, confirm: Application → Standard → Grade → PSL → OD/WT → Length → Welding → NDT → Hydrotest → Coating → Documentation → Traceability → Delivery. The exact requirements should always follow the governing standard, purchase specification, and project requirements.
