Commonly, Hexagonal Heavy-series nuts are used with studs. The non-bearing face of a nut is chamfered, while the load-bearing face is finished with a washer face or may be chamfered.

Nuts may be machined from the same material as the stud or may be of a compatible grade of ASTM A194

What are Heavy Hex Nuts?

Heavy hex nuts are six-sided (hexagonal) internally threaded fasteners and larger versions of common/standard hex nuts. They are widely used for structural applications, and because of this, heavy hex nuts are also known as structural nuts. Hex-heavy nuts are used for high-strength threaded fastening with large diameters. They are thicker and wider than standard hex nuts.


Similar to all other nuts, the heavy hex nuts are also used along with other fasteners, mainly with a bolt to secure two or more materials together. To provide a long-lasting experience, heavy hex nuts are produced in zinc, plain, stainless steel, and galvanized finishes.


Paired with heavy hex bolts, these types of nuts are most common in construction and engineering applications. Hex-heavy nuts are available in various grades and are selected based on the application.

Q: How do I match the nut grade with the bolt grade?

  • Grade 8.8 Bolts should be paired with Class 8 Nuts.

  • Grade 10.9 Bolts require Class 10 Nuts.

  • Grade 12.9 Bolts require Class 12 Nuts.
    Using a lower-grade nut can lead to thread stripping and joint failure. We can recommend the exact matching grade based on your bolt specifications.
