What are the differences between seamless steel pipes and welded steel pipes

Seamless steel pipes and welded steel pipes are commonly used materials in our daily lives and industrial production, and they play important roles on different occasions. Although the two seem similar, they are very different.

First of all, from the appearance point of view, the surface of seamless steel pipes is relatively smooth and has no welding marks; while the surface of welded steel pipes will leave obvious welding lines, which does not look beautiful enough. Therefore, seamless steel pipes are more popular than welded steel pipes in situations where high aesthetics are required.

Secondly, from the perspective of the manufacturing process, seamless steel pipes are made from steel billets through a series of processing procedures (such as piercing, hot rolling, etc.), and no welding process is required. Welded steel pipes require a welding process to weld two or more steel plates together to form a pipe. Therefore, the manufacturing process of seamless steel pipes is more complicated more time-consuming, and energy-consuming, so the price will naturally be higher.

Finally, from a performance perspective, the structure of seamless steel pipe is denser, which determines its high strength, good pressure resistance, and can withstand greater pressure and weight. Welded steel pipes are slightly inferior to seamless steel pipes in terms of corrosion resistance and tensile strength due to physical phenomena such as heat-affected zones and cooling zones at the weld.

In summary, although seamless steel pipes and welded steel pipes are both common pipe materials, they have their advantages and disadvantages and should be selected according to actual needs. For industries that require high aesthetics and high endurance, seamless steel pipes may be more suitable; while for occasions that require economy and low strength requirements, welded steel pipes may be a better choice.
