What are the classifications of stainless steel?

1. Austenitic stainless steel

Austenitic stainless steel refers to stainless steel with austenitic structure at room temperature. When the steel contains about 18% Cr, 8% ~ 25% Ni and 0.1% C, it has stable austenite structure. Austenitic chromium nickel stainless steel includes famous 18Cr-8Ni steel and high Cr Ni series steel developed by increasing Cr and Ni content and adding Mo, Cu, Si, Nb, Ti and other elements. Austenitic stainless steel is non-magnetic and has high toughness and plasticity, but its strength is low.

2. Ferritic stainless steel

Ferritic stainless steel (400 Series) with chromium content of 15% ~ 30% and body centered cubic crystal structure. This kind of steel generally does not contain nickel and sometimes contains a small amount of Mo, Ti, Nb and other elements. This kind of steel has the characteristics of high thermal conductivity, low expansion coefficient, good oxidation resistance and excellent stress corrosion resistance. It is mostly used to manufacture parts resistant to atmospheric, water vapor, water and oxidizing acid corrosion.

3. Duplex stainless steel

Duplex stainless steel (DSS) refers to stainless steel in which ferrite and austenite account for about 50% respectively. Generally, the content of less phase needs to reach 30% at least. When the content of C is low, the content of Cr is 18% ~ 28% and the content of Ni is 3% ~ 10%. Some steels also contain alloy elements such as Mo, Cu, Nb, Ti and n.

4. Precipitation hardening stainless steel

Precipitation hardening stainless steel refers to a kind of high-strength stainless steel that adds different types and quantities of strengthening elements on the basis of the chemical composition of stainless steel, and precipitates different types and quantities of carbides, nitrides, carbonitrides and intermetallic compounds through the precipitation hardening process, so as to improve the strength of steel and maintain sufficient toughness, PH steel for short.

5. Martensitic stainless steel

High strength, but poor plasticity and weldability. The commonly used grades of martensitic stainless steel are 1Cr13, 3Cr13, etc. due to high carbon content, it has high strength, hardness and wear resistance, but the corrosion resistance is slightly poor. It is used for some parts with high mechanical properties and general corrosion resistance requirements, such as springs, turbine blades, hydraulic press valves, etc. This kind of steel is used after quenching and tempering.
