What are the differences between casing and tubing

What is casing pipe?

Casing is a series of steel pipes that are run into a drilled oil well to stabilize the well, keep contaminants and water out of the oil stream, and prevent oil from leaching into the groundwater. Casing is installed in layers, in sections of decreasing diameter that are joined together to form casing strings. The five types of casing string are conductor casing, surface casing, intermediate casing, casing liner, and production casing.

casing pipe: The outer tubes are called casing. Casing lines the wellbore and thus protects the layers of soil and above all the groundwater from being contaminated by the drilling mud and/or frac fluids. It also stabilizes the wellbore, so casing must be able to withstand especially high loads. The drilling and casing alternate the drill string is taken out at specific intervals and the wellbore is lined with casing and cemented. Then drilling continues.

What is tubing?

The tubing is a tube that is lowered into the casing of the well when the well is being produced normally. From the well, the oil flows through the oil pipe into the ground and enters the gathering process. In the coal mining well, the combination of oil pipe, sucker rod and deep well pump draws oil to the ground and enters the gathering process.

Different functions

Casings  usually from20″ to7″ which are run after drilling hole size of24″,171/2″ ,121/2″ and81/2″  after running casing string cementing job is done to make a cement barrier for zonal / reservoir isolation so that channeling of reservoir fluid may be prevented. Casing is very necessary for smooth drilling operations in deep and ERD wells so that hole collapsing may be got rid of. Which can

1. Reinforce the well wall to prevent the formation from collapsing;

2. Separate different oil layers and water layers to achieve stratified mining;

3. Easy to implement fracturing, acidification and other measures and maintenance operations;

4. The formation of oil flow channels, with the oil pipe to achieve the purpose of oil recovery.

Tubing are run after drilling. Tubing are of51/2 to23/8″ in well completions to safe and cost effective maintenance of wells in production phase of well.  Thru tubing we safely and efficiently produce wells according to reservoir volume and nature.
