(1) Its joint connections are suitable for direct welding, eliminating the need for gusset plates or other connectors, saving both labor and materials.
(2) When necessary, concrete can be poured inside the large-diameter steel pipe to form composite components.
(3) Large-diameter steel pipe cross-sections have good geometric characteristics. The pipe walls are generally thinner, the cross-sectional material is distributed around the centroid, the radius of gyration is larger, and it has strong torsional stiffness. As compression, bending, and bi-directional bending members, it has high load-bearing capacity, and the straightness and dimensional accuracy of cold-formed pipes are better than those of hot-rolled open sections.
(4) The appearance is more aesthetically pleasing, especially the pipe trusses composed of steel pipe components, which have no unnecessary joint connections and a modern feel.
(5) In terms of hydrodynamic resistance, circular pipe cross-sections are better, greatly reducing the effects of wind and water flow. Rectangular pipe cross-sections are similar to other open cross-sections in this respect. (6) Large-diameter steel pipes are closed sections; under the same average thickness and cross-sectional area, their exposed surface area is about 50% to 60% of that of open sections, which is beneficial for corrosion prevention and can save coating materials.
